Glimpses from a month that flew by

December was gone in a heartbeat. I'm now officially without home and I have everything I'll be needing for the next five months in a suitcase. Liberating, actually... So, December was a strange time. On the plus side, I spent a week in Berlin, I turned 25, I got a grant that makes the financial situation somewhat easier, had a wonderful Christmas and got one step closer to Montréal. On the down side, I spent two weeks being sick, said goodbye to a beloved friend, was stressed to new levels over the assignment and I turned 25...
Rosa suddenly got a tumor in her brain and was put down on my birthday. It was very strange coming home to my mom for Christmas and not having the little dog running towards me as I closed the front door. We all miss her terribly.
Berlin was great. I felt at home and for the first time since moving away I didn't have that desperate feeling in my heart visiting, like every fiber in my body longed to be there all the time. I think it's because I know I'll be moving back in May, for good, so I know I'll be back soon.
 A little nook in Aarhus.
Having a middle ear infection meant popping pills all the time - while writing an assignment, that is...
 Festive nail polish.
 A 25-year old face with a bow.
I handed in my assignment - the worst thing I've ever written for school - and left the building knowing I won't come back until November when I graduate as a journalist.
Some of the presents I gave away this year.
The youngest brother was keen on Christmas dinner.

Aarhus

I can't believe it's been two months since I posted this! I guess when you spend all your time doing assignments and filling out papers to go off somewhere far away, time just evaporates. In 5 days I'll be on a plane with a great book, my adventure-playlist on the iPhone and good things ahead. The last few months in Aarhus have been strange and not enjoyed as much as they could have been. Aarhus and I have had a complicated relationship: I moved here in late 2008 and was off to a rough start in a squatter apartment with pigeons upstairs and homeless people breaking in downstairs, no job and no money. Later, things looked up as I started journalism school and had 1,5 years of partying, meeting people I can't live without today and learning so many great things. Then came Berlin and Copenhagen, and when I moved back here, nothing was like before and I was stressed out with school. Now it's goodbye and it's with a strange feeling; I never fit in here - as a Copenhagener you'll never be fully accepted in Aarhus... - and it was always a temporary stay. Nevertheless, I've been very happy here, and I'll look back on the Aarhus days with happy memories. So here's how I spent the last weeks:
I made it to a crazy party with Michelle.
Tine visited me for a few (lovely) days.
Had coffee with Lou and Michelle at Great Coffee.
 I went for a walk.
I watched it get colder outside. I sure will miss looking at the little coloured houses!
I had lots of coffee in bed (and a few eggs).
But mostly - and sadly - time was spent in front of the computer working working working.

Tonight I lost my voice

While it was snowing down over Aarhus tonight, I was wide awake. I couldn't sleep, my eyes wouldn't shut, and I was lying there looking out the window on a wintery town, my head spinning with thoughts. I didn't fall asleep until very late, and today my voice is gone... Here's my week in Instashots:
I went to the library to print some stuff. I kind of like that building and its shapes and colours.
I've spent endless hours by my desk this week.
I went out with my headband. I'm not so good at wearing those kinds of things, both because my hair gets flat, and also the wool annoys my ears.
 I had eggs for breakfast.
And looked at buildings in Guldsmedgade.
Thursday was spent at Lynfabrikken (Vestergade 49) working. We sold our feature to a Danish newspaper and had to make some changes to the story. Wuhuu, $$$$.
And this morning, Aarhus was touched by white. The photo quality is horrible, I'm sorry. Have a good weekend! I'll be spending mine in the country. Tschüssi!

w o r k

I'm working. Besides a major project I'm about to embark upon, I have unfinished articles to write and lots of bureaucratic fun to organize. Apparently, it's more complicated to get to Canada than I initially thought. But hey, in little over a month's time I'll arrive in the Great White North, ready to start exploring. Until then; w o r k... Hope you're having a more exciting Monday night out there.

Yéyé on a Sunday

It's raining outside, I slept late and just had pancakes and coffee in bed, all covered in blankets and warmth. I love these Sundays, it even feels nice to know that I have lots of things to do. The whole Montréal thing is starting to dawn on me, and today I'm listening to French music, just to get in the mood. I might have to throw in some Leonard Cohen, too. Have a good Sunday!

Instalately

(You can follow me on Instagram; kseberlin) I recently bought the little milk carton thingy and I'm happy every time I look at it (10 kr. in Tiger)
The other day, the afternoon sun shone so beautifully through the windows at Lynfabrikken. Oh, I love those windows...
One of my favourite things is having breakfast in bed; coffee and food and watching a movie while I wake up slowly but good.
The other day I went down to Paradisbio to have hot chocolate and see an old friend I haven't seen for years. It was so nice catching up!
There's something about winter light that's quite amazing...
These days, I'm wearing my all time favourite nailpolish; Light Year from American Apparel. I've found a good way to resuscitate it when it's down. It's like wearing disco balls on your hands.

Hello november

The colourful leaves are gone, the trees are naked, they're waiting for winter. Me too. The last weeks have been all about preparing for the next year. Filing papers, figuring out things, making decisions that have actually been made a long time ago. It's a strange time. Exciting; filled with dreams that might come true, but it makes me not appreciate where I am right now. Which is something I have to remember. Today for example, we handed in the first big part of our project in school, and I'm really proud of the result. Now, it's weekend - and one where I can relax completely, too. I hope you have a good one out there!

28 hours in faded phone colours

I had a minor meltdown yesterday. Weeks of worrying, running from assignment to assignemt and a hundred other things pressing in my head became too much. Today, the sun shone, and it made things better. (Picture above from Gellerupparken yesterday 12.04)
15.45: After an interview with two fun guys in the Aarhus ghetto, I rushed to school to work on my assignment for class. While I was there, Jonas went to his exam down the hall and became a certified journalist - many congrats! It'll be me in a year which is a very surreal, yet exciting thought...
23.39: Since moving back to Aarhus I'm having trouble sleeping so I'm trying an experiment these days; sleeping with my head in the other end of the bed. There, I am right under the sky window, and it's comforting falling asleep under the stars and with a view over the little town next to me.
08.28: This morning I emptied my hamper hoping it would make me wash. It didn't.
12.55: While working on assignment at Marilou's, she made me melted goat's cheese on top of roasted spelled grains with mint and toasted (homemade!) rye bread. Yummy in my tummy.
13.39: The ground is colourful these days.
16:04: The sun made the view outside my window extra delightful as I sat in my bed writing all afternoon.

Still life

It's getting dark out soon now. It comes creeping in already around 17.30, I realized it as I was walking home from an interview today - it was 19, but it was dark in the wintery kind. Really black, like there's a blanket covering the world. Luckily, it's still in the cosy phase where you appreciate the change of season. Ask me again in a couple of weeks and I'll be ready for spring again. These weeks are very strange. I feel like I can't keep up, like I'm still waiting for summer. I don't even wear a scarf out most days, even though we're getting close to November. I don't really get that it's getting cold. Everything is blurred together and one day takes the next. So what have I been doing? Here are a few glimpses...
Concentrated in Olafur Eliasson's mirror installation at Aros. Concentrated with taking my own picture, of course.........
I'm writing a really interesting paper for school. It's about a young man who died last year, and I'm so amazed by how his friends and family talk to us journalists about the whole thing: so open and happy to share, happy to tell the stories of the person they've lost. So admirable. It's affected me a lot making me think about death and what happens to the people that are left behind.
 Narcissa Sunday-bored.
I painted a few letters and stuff on an old 50s mirror. I think they call it procrastinating.
Like the rest of the world I held my breath when that man jumped out into space. Afterwards, I felt so ashamed of my feeling of disappointment that nothing happened. But he must have had one hell of a view coming down.
I have a bad habit of cutting my bangs way too short...
When I took this photo an early morning, a homeless guy was throwing up a few metres away. There's so much vomit in the area around my house. I'm blaming the discos in the adjacent streets...
Blue town outside my windows.
