Eastern Europe chapter 7: Last day; Sarajevo

And so it was our last day of Eastern European adventures before our long long long journey home. Behind our guesthouse was a little street of low houses where we found a café to have breakfast. The place was run by a short-haired lady with an eccentric style who was so happy that we were there.
The daily market started right on the street, turned a corner and ended in the big Markale market. The Markale suffered terribly during the war as it was hit twice by bombs killing lots of people. The first attack was in 1994 killing 68, the next was in 1995. Today, the market was calm and busy, the people were eager for us to have a look at their stuff, and we spent a long time there looking at red apples and strange lingerie...
We walked up a couple of streets to see an old Bosnian house. We arrived just as a school class was leaving, so the house was so quiet and beautiful with its wooden details and carvings.
We took a taxi to the outskirts of the city to a very special house. It was at the end of a long road and close to the airport. The house was full of holes and looked a little worn but had an amazing story. During the war when the people of Sarajevo were constantly under fire, food and supplies were scarce. The airport was in UN custody, and a father and his son dug a tunnel from their house to the airport in order to supply the people with food and evacuate the weekest inhabitants.
Today, only 25 metres are left of the tunnel - it's only 1,5 metres high and 1 metre wide...! - and it was a claustrophobic experience walking through it. I can't imagine how terrifying it must have been crossing the tunnel back then when your life was depending on it...
A little emotional after the tunnel, we hitched a ride to the nearby town. Here, our mood was lifted when we saw this restaurant....
We took the tram all the way back, and it was nice sitting there by the open window looking out on the city in a 60s tram.
The rest of the day was spent by the river reading and napping (AnCa).
Despite our early departure next day we decided to spend our last evening with cocktails and headed to a nearby bar we'd spotted the same morning. Unfortunately, it wasn't nearly as wild as we'd hoped and we ended up having a few G&Ts before going to sleep. We didn't know what was expecting us the next day.....
